- We WILL have a review at 3pm on Thursday. This will last as long as you have questions (minimum of 50 m). I will announce the room later this week.
- The third review quiz IS STILL DUE on Thursday. If you do not plan on attending the 3pm review, then put your review quiz in my mailbox (POT 745) before then.
20 April, 2007
- Final Exam Review Quiz III is now online.
- The oft mentioned last homework assignment is now finally posted online.
19 April, 2007
- Final Exam Review Quiz II is now online.
- Final Exam Review Quiz I was due today. If I do not have your quiz in my possession at 9:10am tomorrow morning I will not grade it. Please read the introduction on the second review quiz for my feelings about you not doing the review assignments.
- Final Exam Review Quiz II is due Monday.
- The last homework assignment is due Monday.
17 April, 2007
- The remainder of the semester will be spent reviewing for the final exam.
- There will be four review assignments which will each count as a 20 pt quiz. The first three of these will affect your previous exam grades.
- The first Final Exam Review Assignment is due Thursday and is online now on the Review page.
10 April, 2007
- Take-home exam due tomorrow in class.
- New home assignment posted today.
- Next Monday you will be asked to solve problems nearly identical to the last three on the Calculations section the two sine wave question from the third exam. This will augment your exam III grade.
26 March, 2007
- Please remember that part of last week's homework (Sec 10.3) is due WEDNESDAY.
- If you intend to retake the second exam (see below), please tell me when on Thursday you are able to do this. You will have 1 hour to complete the exam, and I prefer that you schedule this during my posted office hours (1:30-5), but if this is not possible you may schedule for any time after 9am.
19 March, 2007
- There may be some 'teaching' happening tomorrow, so you shouldn't miss. Actually this is probably a pretty bad week to miss recitations.
- If you missed class today it would be a good idea to come see me sometime.
- I have added a moderate curve (+6) to the second midterm exam.
- Anyone with a raw score of less than 50 on the second exam may 'retake' the exam 29 March (a week from Thursday). This will not be an identical exam, but will be essentially the same. The maximum score on this exam will be capped at 85. If you retake the exam and score above 50 you will be eligible for the opportunity below.
- Anyone with a raw score above 50 on the second exam may reclaim lost points as follows:
- Make an appointment no later than 29 March to occur no later than 5 April.
- Completely and correctly solve the problem in question. You may not reclaim points on questions 1-4. Question 5 must be answered using the Binomial Theorem. Question 7 must be answered using the Remainder Theorem. Carefully write out your work explaining each step, and clearly state the answer.
- Bring the written corrections and your exam to the appointment and be prepared to explain/defend your work and answer. You must demonstrate that fully understand the problem. You will also be asked to solve a related problem on the spot.
- Additional appointments may be granted on an individual basis, not not if you miss the first appointment without warning.
8 March, 2007
The second exam will be given tomorow morning at 9:00 am. The Home portion of the exam is due at that time. There is a link to this file to the right.
8 March, 2007
The window for improving your Exam 1 scores has closed. Now further adjustments will be made unless you have already made arrangements. There is one small exception. If I find something relating to the take home problem from Exam 1 in my mailbox by 8:00am tomorrow, I will still grade it. If I have returned the proof to you at some point with out a 9 or 10 on it, and I currently do not have any other proofs for your, then you will recieve zero point for that problem.
5 March, 2007
Thursday is the LAST DAY TO IMPROVE YOUR EXAM SCORE!
I am still accepting solutions for the take home problem on the exam. If you do not have a valid proof, please give me something so that I can give you a nonzero grade. This goes for every one who has not received a proof back with a grade of 9 or 10. Seriously, if you can't get the proof, at least give me a short essay in your own words describing the principle of mathematical induction and how one can use it to prove things.
I am very willing to meet with you outside the listed office hours if you make an appointment. I don't need much notice for evening appointments. If you are going to come later, I just need to know in time to not leave.
2 March, 2007
The take-home section of the second exam is available online in pdf format. Please print a copy for your self. I will not make copies for you. If you are worried about using your own paper and ink, or have problems printing you may print from the Mathskeller in the basement of the Classroom Building. This portion of the exam is to be turned in with the rest of the exam on Friday, 9 March.
23 February, 2007
I have added a link to a page from Mathwords.com which gives a nice concise list of facts about polynomials. These are all facts that you should know, altough some are more important than others. It is not an exhaustive list of the things we have covered about polynomials though, as it does not deal with special cases (ie lines and quadratics).

Please not that my office hours are now quite different than they have previously been. In generaly they will now be MTW rather than WRF and are generally later. I would like to remind you that you may make appointments for other times (MTW, or R morning) for general help or reclaiming point on exams or attendance.
Also, the link to the left gives the maximum points for each problem on the exam.
13 February, 2007
Beginning Wednesday, the 14th of February, 2007 and ending Thursday, the 8th of March, 2007, you have an opportunity to improve your exam grade. For each problem on which you did not receive full credit, you may come to office hours and I will ask you questions related to the problem. To receive your missing points, you must convince me that you know what you did wrong the first time, know how to do the problem now, are able to do other related problems, and show understanding of the underlying concepts. You may have no more than three attempts for each problem. You must bring your exam (and the take two version, if applicable) each time. You may not regain points on the induction proof in this way. If you show up without an appointment, you will have to yield to anyone who shows up before you or who has an appointment. I may at some future time set a cap on the total number of visits you can make, which will be not less than the largest number of visits made at that time by any one person.
12 February, 2007
I will need the exams that I returned today back. Please bring them with you tomorrow.
7 February, 2007
I have made one small correction to the review. I am sure there are some other errors, but this one actually made the math incorrect. If you have already printed a copy, please note that Section 4, #4 is incorrect. If should read (a^m)^n = a^(mn) = (a^n)^m.
6 February, 2007
There is now a review document. The document is in the Portable Document Format (pdf). This is an open file format that can be read by several free programs including Adobe Acrobat Reader.
31 January, 2007
Please be aware that the first exam is scheduled for Friday, the 9th of February. If you would be interested in an extra review/problem session that week, start thinking about when you would prefer such a session.
24 January, 2007
I have a (somewhat unexpected) meeting at 1:30pm today. I have no idea how long it will last, but I will return to my office as soon as it is finished. Thus you may want to call the office if you plan of visiting me today. (859.257.6817)
Edit: I am back now.
22 January, 2007
As I mentioned on the first day, I will not always grade every problem assigned. Since which problems I choose will be (seemingly) random, I might not give comments on a problem you had questions on. To remedy this you may star a problem (and even add a question if you wish). This will ensure that I look at that problem (though this will not make it count as part of the grade) and give you comments, answers, advice, etc, and answer any questions you have added. When you star a problem, please make the star easily visible, perhaps in a different color.
18 January, 2007
From now on, you will be able to find a schedule of my office hours for the week on the left side of this page. "R18: 9-3" means Thursday the 18th from 9:00am until 3:00om. I will try to post my schedule for the week by

Welcome to MA 110. This, quite obviously, is the course homepage. To the left you will find links to various resources, including the syllabus and the two online supplemental texts. To the right you will find links such information as homework assignments, suggested reading, and the most recent course schedule.
Here in the center you will find announcements about the course. These will usually be more important than today. You will be notified by email when there are important things to read here.
